Por vs. para

Por and para are two prepositions that can cause trouble for Spanish learners. They can often be translated as the English for, but they actually have separate meanings in addition to other translations and uses.

Para mi querido primo Alberto:

Te envié un regalo por tu cumpleaños; espero que lo hayas recibido.

Me has ayudado mucho desde que somos pequeños y por eso quiero darte las gracias.

Desde que me fui a Londres para trabajar no sabemos mucho el uno del otro.

When to use por and when to use para

The best way to learn when to use por and when to use para is to determine the intent behind what you wish to express. A good start is to divide their use into three categories:

Expressing motive or purpose

Por: expresses the motive, cause or reason behind an action. A general rule is that if you can substitute because of into your sentence, por is the preposition you need (= because of/why).

Examples:
Te envié un regalo por tu cumpleaños.I sent you a gift for your birthday.
(because it is your birthday)
Por eso quiero darte las gracias.That’s why I want to say thank you.
(because of this reason)
—¿Por qué llegas tarde?Why are you late?
—Por el tráfico.Because of the traffic.
Nos hemos mudado por el ruido.We moved because of the traffic.
Por ti hago cualquier cosa.I would do anything for you.
(because of you)
Voy al supermercado por leche.I’m going to the supermarket to get milk.
He venido a México por la comida.I came to Mexico because of the food.

Para: indicates the ultimate purpose of the action (= to/in order to/so/so that).

Examples:
Para que veas que no me he olvidado de ti.So that you see that I haven’t forgotten you.
Me fui a Londres para trabajar.I went to London to work.
Ese objetivo sirve para hacer fotos de cerca.That lens is used to take close-up photos.
Me pongo ya el abrigo para salir cuanto antes.I put my coat on to go out as soon as possible.

Expressing a choice, stance or a personal opinion

Por: indicates someone’s personal choice or stance regarding an established and specific situation, like a plan, suggestion or invitation (= if it were up to me/as far as I’m concerned/if you ask me).

Examples:
Por mí, haz lo que quieras.As far as I’m concerned, you can do what you want.
Por nosotros, vamos al cine.If it were up to us, we would go to the cinema.
por + invitation or suggestion

Para: in contrast, para expresses a personal opinion of a more general nature that is not (necessarily) given as a response (= to me/in my eyes/for me).

Examples:
Para mí, eres el mejor primo del mundo.To me, you are the best cousin in the world.
Para mi hermana, la puntualidad es importantísima.Being punctual is of the utmost importance to my sister.
para + affirmative clause

Expressing movement or direction

Por: refers to the idea of passing by or passing through without stopping (= by/past/through).

Examples:
He pasado por tu casa.I walked by your house.
La ruta pasa por Segovia.The route goes through Segovia.

Para: expresses a final destination (= for/to).

Examples:
Este tren sale para Asturias en quince minutos.This train leaves for Asturias in 15 minutes.
Salgo para tu casa en cinco minutos.I’m leaving for your house in 5 minutes.

Other uses of por

The preposition por is also used to express the following ideas:

  • manner (= by/via);
    Examples:
    Podemos hablar por teléfono.We can speak on the phone.
    Nos comunicamos por carta.We communicate by letter.
    Puede contactarme por correo electrónico.You can contact me by email.
    Me he enterado del terremoto por las noticias.I heard about the earthquake via the news.
    Desde Madrid a Asturias se va por la autopista A6.You can go via the A6 from Madrid to Asturias.
  • exchange (= for);
    Examples:
    He comprado un microondas de segunda mano por diez euros.I bought a second-hand microwave for 10 euros.
    ¿Me cambias tu postre por el mío?Do you want to swap your dessert for mine?
  • approximate location, la zona de (= by/around/near);
    Examples:
    Martina vive por la Plaza Mayor.Martina lives by the Plaza Mayor.
    ¿Hay un cajero por aquí?Is there an ATM around here?
  • times of day (= in/at);
    Examples:
    por la(s) mañana(s), por la(s) tarde(s), por la(s) noche(s)in the morning(s), in the afternoon(s), in the evening(s), at night
    however:
    al mediodía, de madrugadaat midday, in the early morning
  • frequency (= x times a week/month/year etc.);
    Example:
    Salgo a correr tres veces por semana.I go running three times a week.
  • distribution (= per);
    Example:
    Repartirán una botella de agua por persona.They will distribute one bottle of water per person.
  • percentages;
    Examples:
    4% = cuatro por ciento
    100km/h = cien kilómetros por hora
  • together with the verbs estar, faltar and quedar to express something unfinished or not yet completed (= still);
    Examples:
    Eso aún está por hacer.That still needs to be done.
    Falta por ver la exposición de Goya.We still haven’t seen the Goya exhibition.
    Queda mucho por hacer.There is still a lot to do.
  • «en nombre de» (= on behalf of/for);
    Examples:
    Se disculpó por nosotros. → Se disculpó en nuestro nombre.He apologised for us.
    Tus padres pueden firmar por ti. → Tus padres pueden firmar en tu nombre.You parents can sign on your behalf.
  • to introduce the subject in passive sentences (= by);
    Example:
    El herido fue transportado al hospital por la ambulancia.The injured person was taken to the hospital by the ambulance.

Other uses of para

In addition to the three categories above, para can also be used:

  • for an addressee or recipient (= for/to);
    Examples:
    Para mi querido primo Alberto.To my dear cousin Alberto.
    Esta película es para todos los públicos.This film is for all audiences.
  • for a time period or deadline (= by/for);
    Examples:
    El resultado de los exámenes estará para la semana que viene.The exam results will be available by next week.
    El trabajo de fin de curso es para junio.The end of course project is for June.
  • to say that something is a typical example (without a verb and with a comma);
    Examples:
    Para ciudades bonitas, Sevilla.If we’re talking about beautiful cities, Seville.
    Para gracioso, tu primo Eduardo.If we’re talking about funny, your cousin Eduardo.
  • to be ironic with a negative meaning (= to);
    Examples:
    Para perder el tiempo estoy yo. → No puedo perder el tiempo.I’m here to waste time. → I can’t waste time.
    Para celebraciones estoy yo. → No estoy de humor para celebraciones.I’m here to celebrate. → I’m not in the mood to celebrate.
  • for a concession (= given that/considering/for)
Example:
Para ser junio, hace frío.It’s quite cold for June.

Remember

Spanish never uses por or para to express duration.

Although in English we use for to talk about how long a situation or event lasts, Spanish uses no preposition.

Examples:
Estuve viajando por los países nórdicos tres meses.I was travelling through the nordic countries for three months. → English uses for before a time period, Spanish does not.
not: Estuve viajando por lost países nórdicos por tres meses.
Nos vamos de vacaciones a Cuba dos semanas.We’re going on holiday to Cuba for two weeks. → English uses for before a time period, Spanish does not.
not: Nos vamos de vacaciones a Cuba por dos semanas.

Expressions with por and para

In addition to the examples above, there are also many Spanish expressions that contain the prepositions por and para. The majority are used in spoken Spanish and informal contexts.

por ahora for now Por ahora, no llueve.For now, it’s not raining.
por ejemplo for example El viernes podemos hacer algo juntos; por ejemplo: ir al cine o salir a cenar.This Friday we can do something together, for example, we could go to the cinema or out for dinner.
por supuesto of course El tren tiene retraso, por supuesto.The train is delayed, of course.
por fin finally, at last Por fin me ha llegado el pedido que hice la semana pasada.The order I made last week has finally arrived.
por cierto by the way Hoy ha llamado mamá. Por cierto, ¿sabes cómo está la abuela?Mum called today. By the way, do you know how grandma is?
por lo menos at least No sé cuántas personas había en la manifestación; por lo menos diez mil.I don’t know how many people there were at the protest; at least ten thousand.
por lo tanto therefore Hay mucho que hacer en la oficina. Por lo tanto, saldré tarde.There’s a lot to do in the office. Therefore I’ll leave late.
por si acaso (just) in case No sé si va a llover. Por si acaso, me llevo el paraguas.I don’t know if it’s going to rain. In case it does I’ve got my umbrella.
por poco nearly Hoy me he quedado dormida. Por poco pierdo el autobús al trabajo.Today I overslept. I nearly missed the bus to work.
por lo visto apparently Han abierto un cine en el antiguo teatro del barrio. Por lo visto, quieren proyectar películas clásicas el primer lunes de cada mes.They’ve opened a cinema in the old neighbourhood theatre. Apparently they are going to show classic films on the first Monday of every month.
por suerte luckily Hoy me he quedado dormida. Por suerte, el tren tenía retraso y he llegado a tiempo al trabajo.Today I overslept. Luckily, the train was delayed and I arrived to work on time.
por casualidad by chance Mi lapicero no tiene punta. ¿Por casualidad tienes un sacapuntas?My pencil is blunt. Do you have a sharpener by chance?
por último finally Hoy he ido a clase, he comido con mi hermana y he estudiado un par de horas en la biblioteca. Por último, he salido a correr 5 kilómetros.Today I went to class, ate with my sister and studied for a few hours in the library. Finally I went out and ran 5 kilometres.
por cuenta propia freelance Desde que terminé la universidad he trabajado por cuenta propia como traductora autónoma.Since I finished university I’ve worked freelance as an independent translator.
algo por el estilo something like that Creo que este viernes estrenan una película de miedo o algo por el estilo.I think this Friday they are showing a horror film or something like that.
dar algo por perdido to give something up for lost Cuando vi que se me habían caído las gafas de sol a la vía del tren, las di por perdidas.When I saw that my sunglasses had fallen on the train tracks I gave them up for lost.
punto por punto point by point El profesor ha repasado toda la lección punto por punto.The teacher repeated the whole lesson point by point.
a por todas go all out En el campeonato de esta tarde, nuestro equipo va a por todas.Our team went all out in the championship this afternoon.
¡por la amistad! (brindis) to friendship! (in a toast) —Hagamos un brindis.
—¡Por la amistad!–Let’s make a toast.
–To friendship!
por las buenas o por las malas whether you want to or not Aquellos que no tengan entrada para el concierto tendrán que marcharse, por las buenas o por las malas.Those who do not have tickets for the concert will have to leave, whether they want to or not.

No estoy para bromas. I’m not in the mood for jokes. Llevo un día muy mal; no estoy para bromas.I’ve had a bad day, I’m not in the mood for jokes.
No estar el horno para bollos. (common saying) it’s not a good time. Yo no pediría todavía un aumento. No está el horno para bollos.I’m not going to ask for a raise yet. It’s not a good time.

Verbs with por and para

Some verbs take por or para as a preposition.

caracterizarse por to be characterised by Las películas de Almodóvar se caracterizan por la naturalidad de sus personajes.Almodóvar’s films are characterised by the spontaneity of his characters.
cambiar (algo) por to swap something for something else Me gustaría cambiar los zapatos por una talla más pequeña.I’d like to swap the shoes for a smaller size.
clasificar por sorted by En la estantería del salón tengo los libros clasificados por autor.In the living room shelves I have the books sorted by author.
dar las gracias (a alguien) por to thank someone for something Te doy las gracias por ayudarme con la mudanza.I’d like to thank you for helping me with the move.
decidirse por to decide on something Después de consultar los precios, me decidí por Grecia para pasar las vacaciones.After looking at the prices, I decided on Greece for our holiday.
desvivirse por to do anything for someone Mi hermano mayor es profesor y se desvive por sus alumnos.My older brother is a teacher and he would do anything for his students.
esforzarse por to make an effort La ministra se esforzó por mejorar las condiciones laborales.The ministry is making an effort to improve working conditions.

tener (a alguien) por to think of someone as Te tengo por una persona muy trabajadora.I think of you as a hard worker.
terminar por to end up Después de mucha indecisión, hemos terminado por comer en el mismo restaurante de siempre.After a lot of indecision, we ended up eating in the same restaurant as always.
votar por to vote for someone/something Voy a votar por la misma alcaldesa que teníamos.I’m going to vote for the mayoress that we have.
