The Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics is an international event for snow and ice sports. This means that it is only held in countries in the northern hemisphere, such as the United States, France, Japan, Italy and Switzerland, among others. Probably because the southern hemisphere is too warm.

The first Winter Olympics were celebrated in the French city of Chamonix in 1924 and there were competitions in downhill sledding, ice hockey, cross-country skiing and speed skating. Later ski jumping was added. Since then, the Games have been held every four years. Although, from 1940 to 1948 there was a break due to the Second World War. With the arrival of television in Spain in 1947, the broadcast of the games has become very popular.

The Spanish team have had moments of glory throughout the course of history, and many athletes have made it to the podium. For example, in 2018 Javier Fernández won the first Spanish medal for skating. Regino Hernández, a snowboard cross athlete, also won a bronze medal.

The Winter Olympics are, without a doubt, a goal for the best athletes in the world, who train hard to reach the level of the competition. The spectators applaud and support the athletes from the stands at every moment, waving flags from all around the world.
