When to use the infinitive after a preposition

We use the infinitive after the following prepositions as part of a verbal periphrasis: a, con, de, en, para and por.

The preposition comes between the conjugated verb and the infinitive: verb + preposition + infinitive.

aprender Tatiana ha aprendido a hacer pan. Tatiana has learned to make bread.
ayudar Una nutricionista me ayudará a mejorar mi dieta. A nutritionist will help me to improve my diet.
bajar Voy a bajar a comprar unos cruasanes. I’m going downstairs to buy some croissants.
comenzar Sergio ha comenzado a hacer pilates los viernes. Sergio has started doing pilates on Fridays.
dedicarse Me estoy dedicando a coleccionar recetas libanesas. I’m collecting Lebanese recipes.
empezar He empezado a cuidar mi dieta para bajar el colesterol. I’ve started to watch my diet to lower my cholesterol.
enseñar Lauriane me quiere enseñar a hacer una quiche. Lauriane wants to teach me to make a quiche.
incitar Esa tienda me incita a comprar galletas. That shop makes me want to buy biscuits.
ir El domingo iremos a comprar verdura al mercado. On Sunday, we’re going to go and buy vegetables at the market.
negarse Me niego a pedir pizza para cenar otra vez. I refuse to order pizza for dinner again.
obligar Nadie te obliga a cuidarte. No one is forcing you to look after yourself.
probar Prueba a consumir harina integral. Try to eat wholemeal flour.
renunciar He renunciado a comer pan blanco. I’ve given up eating white bread.
salir ¿Salimos a dar una vuelta? Shall we go for a walk?
subir Los vecinos han subido a ofrecernos magdalenas. The neighbours came up to offer us some muffins.
venir Mis hermanos han venido a ayudarnos con la mudanza. My brothers came to help us with the move.
amenazar con
 Mi hermana me ha amenazado con cambiar la sal por el azúcar. My sister threatened to replace the salt with sugar.
bastar No basta con hacer solo un poco de ejercicio. A small amount of exercise is not enough.
conformarse Me conformo con comer pescado dos veces a la semana. I’m happy to eat fish twice a week.
soñar Sueño con abrir un restaurante para celíacos. I dream of opening a restaurant for coeliacs.
alegrarse de
 Me alegro de encontrar tiempo para descansar. I’m glad to find time to rest.
arrepentirse Me arrepiento de no haber probado ese zumo tan apetitoso. I regret not having tried that tasty juice.
avergonzarse Me avergüenzo de pagar el gimnasio y no ir nunca. I’m embarrassed about paying for the gym and never going.
cansarse Me he cansado de desayunar siempre lo mismo. I’m tired of always having the same thing for breakfast.
dejar He dejado de tomar café. I’ve stopped drinking coffee.
encargarse Mi entrenador se encarga de preparar una rutina de ejercicios. My trainer is in charge of creating my exercise routine.
ocuparse En casa, yo siempre me ocupo de escoger el menú. At home, I’m always in charge of choosing the menu.
olvidarse Sabrina se ha olvidado de poner levadura en el bizcocho. Sabrina forgot to put yeast in the cake.
parar Para de consumir tanto azúcar. Stop eating so much sugar.
tratar Estoy tratando de comer menos carne. I’m trying to eat less meat.
empeñarse en
 Clara se ha empeñado en invitarme a un café. Clara insisted on inviting me for a coffee.
entretenerse Estoy entreteniéndome en limpiar la nevera. I’m busy cleaning the fridge.
insistir Marcos insiste en ir a un dietista. Marcos insists on seeing a dietician.
molestarse No me molesto en mirar las calorías de los alimentos. I don’t bother to look at the calories in food.
pensar Estoy pensando en hacerme vegetariana. I’m thinking of going vegetarian.
tardar ¿Cuánto tardas en hacer pan casero? How long does it take to make homemade bread?
arreglárselas para
 No sé cómo te las arreglas para tener siempre tan buena cara. I don’t know how you always manage to look so good.
autorizar Mi jefe me ha autorizado para aparcar en el parking de la empresa. My boss has authorised me to park in the company car park.
ser Esta crema es para dar elasticidad a la piel. This cream is to give the skin more elasticity.
servir Este aparato sirve para preparar espaguetis de verduras en casa. This device is used to make vegetable spaghetti at home.
esforzarse por
 Nos esforzamos por llevar una dieta equilibrada. We strive to have a balanced diet.
felicitar En el gimnasio me han felicitado por superar mi marca personal. I was congratulated at the gym for beating my personal best.
luchar Estoy luchando por no picotear entre horas. I’m struggling not to snack between meals.
