Quantifiers in Spanish grammar

What are quantifiers?

Quantifiers (los cuantificadores) are words that express a quantity or amount.

This amount can be concrete: ambos (= both), todos (= all), siete (= seven) … or approximate: algunos (= some), pocos (= a few), varios (= several) …

Example

Hace unos días celebramos el cumpleaños de mi hermano Alex. Contratamos algunas actuaciones artísticas para amenizar la fiesta y disfrutamos del espectáculo de un payaso y un malabarista.

El payaso nos sorprendió mucho porque sabía hacer cualquier animal con los globos.

El malabarista entró en el jardín montado en su monociclo. ¡Cómo puede mantener el equilibrio con una sola rueda! Además, al tiempo que rodaba, iba haciendo equilibrios con varias bolas a la vez.

Mi hermano Alex quedó encantado. Además recibió muchos regalos y le acompañaron casi todos sus amigos.

No sé qué vamos a hacer ahora con toda la tarta que ha sobrado.

Quantifiers: the basics

A quantifier is a word that indicates a concrete or approximate quantity.

Example:
Hace unos días celebramos el cumpleaños de mi hermano. We celebrated my brother’s birthday a few days ago.
how many days? → a few

Quantifiers can belong to various parts of speech:

  • adjectives: mucho much/many, poco not much/few/little, etc.
  • adverbs: muy very, tan so, etc.
  • numbers: uno one, dos two, siete seven, etc.
  • pronouns: cualquier any, algunos some, etc.

Some quantifiers change their endings to agree with the noun they accompany in terms of both gender and number; others only have singular and plural forms while others only have masculine and feminine forms. Many are invariable (i.e. they never change).

The table below shows which quantifiers change and how:

otro/-a/-os/-as ¿Puedes sacar otra foto? Can you take another photo?
poco/-a/-os/-as La piscina tiene poca agua. THe pool doesn’t have much water.
tanto/-a/-os/-as Nunca había visto tantos globos juntos. I’d never seen so many balloons together.
todo/-a/-os/-as Quiero darle las gracias a todos los invitados. I want to thank all the guests.
bastante/-s only change their endings for singular/plural Hemos comido bastantes pasteles. We’ve eaten quite a few cakes.
cualquier, cualesquiera El payaso sabe hacer cualquier animal con los globos. The clown knows how to make any animal out of balloons.
suficiente/-s Hay suficiente tarta para todo el mundo. There’s enough cake for everyone.
ambos/-as only change their endings for masculine/feminine Ambas actuaciones están siendo espectaculares. Both performances are spectacular.
ningún, ninguno/-a Nadie tiene ninguna queja. No one has any complaints.
uno/-a Una no sabe qué inventarse para celebrar una fiesta original. You just don’t know what to come up with for an original party.
varios/-as Hemos tardado varios días en preparar esta fiesta. It took us several days to prepare the party.
algo invariable Mis tíos han traído algo sin gluten para comer. My uncles have brought something gluten free to eat.
alguien Alguien se ha olvidado la chaqueta. Someone has forgotten their jacket.
cada Hemos regado cada planta del jardín por la mañana. We watered each plant in the garden in the morning.
más Esta fiesta es más divertida que la mía. This party is more fun than mine.
menos Alex ha recibido menos regalos que el año pasado. Alex got fewer presents than last year.
muy Alex está muy emocionado. Alex is very excited.
nada En la nevera no queda nada. There’s nothing left in the fridge.
nadie No hay nadie en la piscina. There’s no one in the pool.
quienquiera A la fiesta puede venir quienquiera. Anyone can come to the party.
tan El globo del elefante es tan grande que no cabe por la puerta. The elephant balloon is so big that it can’t fit through the door.

ambos, cada, todo

  • ambos = both
  • cada = each/every
  • todo = all/whole

ambos, ambas
 Me gustan ambos sabores. I like both flavours.
cada
 Cada invitado trajo un regalo. Each guest brought a present.
todo, toda, todos, todas el, la… Todos los invitados están emocionados. All the guests are excited.
este, ese… Toda esta fiesta ha sido idea de mi madre. This whole party was my mum’s idea.
mi, tu… Han venido todos sus amigos. All his friends came.
todo
 Mi madre lo filmó todo. My mum filmed everything.

These quantifiers can also stand alone; i.e. without a noun.

ambos, ambas
 Me gustan ambos. I like both.
cada + uno
 Cada uno trajo un regalo. Each one brought a present.
todos, todas Todos están emocionados. Everyone was excited.
Han venido todos. Everyone came.

uno, un, algún, ningún

  • uno = you/one to make general statements
  • un = one/a/an
  • algún = some (/any in negatives and questions)
  • ningún = none/not one

ningún, ninguna		 ¿Me das un trozo más de tarta? Will you give me one more piece of cake?
Algún globo se fue volando. Some balloon flew away.
Ningún invitado estaba aburrido. None of the guests were bored.
unos, unas
algunos, algunas
 Unas amigas improvisaron un baile. Some friends improvised a dance.
Algunos globos se pincharon. Some balloons burst.

These quantifiers can also stand alone; i.e. without an explicit noun.

uno, una
unos, unas		 No puedo comer ni uno más. I can’t eat another one.
Unos se marcharon antes de cantar cumpleaños feliz. Some people left before singing happy birthday.
alguno, alguna
algunos, algunas		 Alguno se fue volando. Some flew away.
Algunos se pincharon. Some of them burst.
ninguno, ninguna Ninguna es sin gluten. None are gluten free.

Double negation

The quantifier ningún/ninguno is sometimes used with standard negation and sometimes with a double negative depending on whether it comes before or after the verb:

  • standard negation: ningún/ninguno + verb
    Example:
    Ningún invitado se aburre. None of the guests were bored.
    before the verb
  • double negative: no + verb + ningún/ninguno
    Example:
    No se aburre ningún invitado. None of the guests were bored.
    after the verb

otro, cualquiera, quienquiera

  • otro = another/a different
Quantifier Example
otro, otra

 Si como otro trozo de tarta, voy a explotar. If I eat another piece of cake, I’m going to explode.
Nadie está bailando. Voy a poner otra canción. No one is dancing. I’m going to put on a different song.
otros, otras + number Otros tres invitados llegaron al final de la fiesta. Another three guests arrived at the end of the party.
  • cualquier, cualquiera, cualesquiera = any/anyone/any old/whoever

cualquier
cualesquiera		 + noun El payaso podía hacer cualquier animal con los globos. The clown could make any animal out of balloons.
Todos los invitados bailaban con cualesquiera canciones. All the guests were dancing to any old songs.
un/una + noun + cualquiera Una persona cualquiera tiene que encender las velas de la tarta. A random person has to light the candles on the cake.

These quantifiers can also stand alone; i.e. without a noun.

otro, otra
otros, otras		 Si como otro, voy a explotar. If I eat another, I’m going to explode.
Estas canciones son aburridas; los niños quieren bailar otras. These songs are boring; the children want to dance to different ones.
cualquiera
cualesquiera		 Cualquiera puede organizar una fiesta así. Anyone can organise a party like this.
Cualesquiera pueden pedirle un animal al payaso. Anyone can ask the clown for a balloon animal.
uno/una cualquiera —¿Quieres un trozo de tarta? —Do you want a piece of cake?
—Sí, dame uno cualquiera. —Yes, give me any one.

Note

Use cualquier directly before a noun and cualquiera after a noun or when the noun is omitted from the sentence.

Examples:
Cualquier día. Any day.
Un día cualquiera. Any day.
  • quienquiera = anyone (another way of saying cualquier persona). It does not appear with a noun.
    Example:
    Quienquiera puede organizar una fiesta así. Anyone can organise a party like this.

mucho, muy

  • mucho = much/many/a lot of/lots of
  • muy = very

mucho, mucha
muchos, muchas		 + noun Hacía mucho sol. There’s a lot of sun.
Los invitados trajeron muchos regalos. The guests brought lots of presents.
verb + mucho Comimos mucho. We ate a lot.
muy + adjective/adverb Alex estaba muy emocionado. Alex was very excited.
Nadie llegó muy tarde. No one arrived very late.

bastante, demasiado, poco, suficiente, varios

  • bastante = quite/enough
  • demasiado = too …
  • poco = little/few/not much
  • suficiente = enough
  • varios = several

demasiado + adjective/adverb Algunos invitados llegaron demasiado pronto.Some guests arrived too early.

Por hoy, es suficiente. It’s enough for today.
Mi padre comió poco. My dad didn’t eat much.
singular noun + suficiente Hay tarta suficiente para todo el mundo. There’s enough cake for everyone.

suficiente		 + uncountable noun En el jardín había poca sombra. There’s not much shade in the garden.
Había demasiada comida. There was too much food.
Hay suficiente tarta para todo el mundo. There’s enough cake for everyone.
varios, varias
pocos, pocas
demasiados, demasiadas
suficientes		 + plural noun El malabarista bailaba con varias bolas a la vez. The juggler was dancing with several balls at the same time.
La tarta tenía pocas velas. The cake didn’t have many candles.
Alex ya tiene demasiados juguetes. Alex already has too many toys.
Hay suficientes helados para todos. There are enough ice creams for everyone.
plural noun + suficientes Hay helados suficientes para todos. There are enough ice creams for everyone.

Note

The noun can come before or after the quantifier suficiente (= enough) without changing its meaning.

Example:
Tenemos tiempo suficiente para preparar el cumpleaños. = Tenemos suficiente tiempo para preparar el cumpleaños. We have enough time to prepare the birthday party.
  • Demasiado means too … while demasiado poco means not enough
Example:
El agua de la piscina está demasiado fría. The water in the pool is too cold.
Quedan demasiados pocos helados para dar a todos los invitados. There aren’t enough ice creams left for all the guests.
  • Bastante has two meanings: quite … and enough.
Examples:
Hemos invitado a bastante gente a la fiesta. We’ve invited quite a few people to the party.
bastante = quite a few
Vendrá bastante gente para el juego de la piñata. Enough people will come for the piñata.
bastante = enough

verb + bastante Todos comimos bastante. Everyone ate enough.
bastante
 + uncountable noun Había bastante comida. There was enough food.
+ adjective/adverb Mi hermana estaba bastante emocionada. My sister was quite excited.
Marián llegó bastante tarde. Marián arrived quite late.
bastantes + plural noun Alex tiene bastantes amigos. Alex has quite a few friends.

más, menos, tan, tanto

  • más = more
  • menos = less
  • tan = as
  • tanto = so …

These quantifiers all appear in comparisons.

más + noun Esta vez vinieron más invitados que otros años. This time more guests came than in previous years.
menos El malabarista actuó menos tiempo que el payaso. The juggler performed for less time than the clown.
tanto, tanta, tantos, tantas ¡El payaso hizo tantos animales con los globos! The clown made so many balloon animals!

El tío Matías llegó menos tarde que otras veces. Uncle Matías wasn’t as late as on previous occasions.

alguien, algo, nadie, nada

  • alguien = someone/somebody
  • algo = something
  • nadie = no one/nobody
  • nada = nothing
Quantifier Example
affirmative clause + alguien Dudo que alguien se aburra en esta fiesta. I doubt that anyone will be bored at the party.
algo El gato también recibió algo rico de comer. The cat also got something tasty to eat.
negated clause + nadie Por suerte, no dio un discurso nadie. Luckily, no one gave a speech.
nada Nuestro primo Luis no trajo nada a la fiesta. Our cousin Luis didn’t bring anything to the party.

Double negation

The quantifiers nada and nadie can take standard negation or a double negative depending on whether they come before or after the verb:

  • simple negation: nada/nadie + verb
    Example:
    A nadie le gusta el helado de menta. No one liked the mint ice cream.
    before the verb
  • double negation: no + verb + nada/nadie
    Example:
    El helado de menta no le gusta a nadie. No one liked the mint ice cream.
    after the verb

Quantifiers + de

Some quantifiers are used with the preposition de in order to combine them with personal pronouns, definite articles, demonstratives or possessives.

 Alguno de nosotros tiene que preparar las velas. Some of us have to prepare the candles.
Algunos de los invitados han llegado tarde. Some of the guests were late.
Ninguna de estas tartas es sin gluten. None of these cakes are gluten free.
Algunas de sus velas se han apagado. Some of the candles have gone out.
otro, otra* Otra de las sorpresas es que el payaso canta súper bien. Another surprise is that the clown sings brilliantly.
Organizaré otra de estas fiestas el año que viene. I’m going to organise another one of these parties next year.
Otra de mis manías es estar pendiente de todo. Another one of my fixations is being aware of everything.
cualquiera
 Cualquiera de vosotros habría hecho lo mismo. Any one of you would have done the same.
Cualquiera de las tartas está buenísima. Any one of the cakes is delicious.
Cualquiera de estos vasos está sin usar. Any of these glasses is unused.
Cualquiera de sus amigos te caerá bien. You’ll like any one of his friends.
muchos, muchas
pocos, pocas
varios, varias		 Muchos de nosotros repetimos tarta. Lots of us had second helpings of cake.
Pocas de nuestras fiestas han sido tan espectaculares. Few of our parties have been so spectacular.
Pocas de estas fiestas se olvidan. Not many of these parties will be forgotten.
Varias de las tartas tenían lactosa. Several of the cakes contain lactose.

*Note: when otro/otra are followed by de, they are always singular.

Certain quantifiers require the preposition de before an uncountable noun.

Quantifier Example
un poco* de
 + uncountable noun Hay un poco de chocolate en la nevera. There’s a bit of chocolate in the fridge.
algo
nada
 ¿Queda algo de tarta de limón? Is there some of lemon cake left?
No has comido nada de helado. You haven’t eaten any ice cream.

*always masculine, even if the noun that follows is feminine.

Example:
Hay un poco de limonada en la nevera. There’s some lemonade in the fridge.
